Assemblyman Kevin Byrne (Mahopac) is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of his 2022 Summer Reading Challenge. This year, over twenty-five students from both Westchester and Putnam Counties participated in the program, which requires children to read for at least 15 minutes every day for forty days during the summer to continue developing their literacy skills. The theme of this year’s challenge was Oceans of Possibilities. The New York State Education Department’s Division of Library Development provides a suggested reading list at https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/summer/facts.htm

“Reading during the summer months is a critical exercise to aid our young students in their academic development. The Summer Reading Challenge is a way to get our young people excited about reading on their own time and I’m grateful to be a part of it,” said Byrne. “We are blessed every year to have lots of participation, and it was a pleasure to once again celebrate the occasion with students and their families. I would also like to thank our district libraries and school districts for their support of the program, as well as give a special thank you to the Patterson Library for graciously hosting our event to honor all our participants.”

“Assemblyman Kevin Byrne’s Summer Reading Challenge was a great success. We were happy to be this year’s host of a wonderful pizza party that celebrated participants’ achievement of 40 days of summer reading,” said Stephanie Harrison, Patterson Library Director. “The Patterson Library is grateful to have Assemblyman Byrne as a partner in supporting libraries’ work to encourage a love of reading with children and their families,” said Stephanie Harrison, Patterson Library Director.

Byrne held a pizza party with the students who completed the challenge on September 27st and presented them with certificates recognizing their achievement. The event was held at the Patterson Library.
